Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypothyroidism and why does it occur?
Is hypothyroidism a lifelong disease?
Can hypothyroidism be cured naturally through Ayurveda?
Ayurveda focuses on correcting the root cause by balancing Kapha and Vata dosha, improving Agni (digestive fire), and detoxifying the body. In many cases, Ayurveda helps normalize thyroid levels and reduce dependency on hormone replacement therapy.
Is it safe to take Ayurvedic medicines along with Thyroxine?
Yes, Ayurvedic medicines can be taken along with Thyroxine initially. As thyroid levels improve, the dose of Thyroxine may be gradually reduced under the guidance of a qualified physician.
Does hypothyroidism cause weight gain?
Yes. Low thyroid hormone levels slow down metabolism, leading to weight gain. Proper treatment, diet control, and lifestyle modification can help manage weight effectively.
Can hypothyroidism affect fertility and pregnancy?
Untreated hypothyroidism can cause menstrual irregularities, infertility, and complications during pregnancy. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are essential for a healthy pregnancy and fetal development.
How long does it take to see improvement in thyroid levels with treatment?
Improvement may be seen within 15–30 days in laboratory values such as T3, T4, and TSH. Symptomatic improvement usually occurs gradually over a few months with consistent treatment
What foods should be avoided in hypothyroidism?
Sour foods, fermented items, refined flour (Maida), Besan, processed foods, and excessive cold foods should be avoided. A light, warm, and easily digestible diet is recommended.
Can stress worsen hypothyroidism?
Yes. Chronic stress negatively affects hormonal balance and can worsen thyroid function. Stress management through yoga, pranayama, meditation, and proper sleep is highly beneficial.
How often should thyroid tests be repeated?
Thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH) should be repeated every 15–30 days initially and later every 2–3 months, depending on improvement and medical advice.
