Diabetes
- What is Diabetes?
- Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by increased levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood due to insufficient insulin production or improper utilization of insulin by the body. It gradually affects multiple organs including kidneys, eyes, nerves, heart, and blood vessels. According to Ayurveda, Diabetes (Madhumeha) occurs due to imbalance of Kapha and Vata dosha, weak digestive fire (Agni), and accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body.
Types of Diabetes
- Type 1 Diabetes – Autoimmune condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Usually occurs at a younger age and requires lifelong insulin support.
- Type 2 Diabetes – Most common type where the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin. Often associated with obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet.
- Gestational Diabetes – Develops during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Usually temporary but increases future risk of diabetes.
